Bug?: PS4 left joystick keeps pulling up (steam version)

#1

So I plugged in my PS4 controller to try out how it would feel instead of using a keyboard. But for some reason, the left joystick keeps pulling up. But this only happens when selecting items in the game menu and the different entries in the book (journal?) in game. When moving my character around the map, the joystick doesn’t pull up. Not sure if this is a bug, or if I’m doing something wrong. Thank you.

We’ll look into it.

We’ve tested PS4 controllers before on PC, and they’ve never caused issues. You may want to try reinstalling drivers and trying a second PS4 controller if you have one.

#3

Don’t have a second PS4 controller that I can test out, unfortunately. Which drivers should I try reinstalling? Also, are there any particular controller setting I should apply on steam?

Thank you for the prompt response!

#4

Hey, dioprem!

I’m not sure which drivers Steam uses to run PS4 controllers.
Have you tried setting up your controller using the PS4 Configuration Support option?

If you go into your Steam settings, you can find the controller settings at the bottom:
image

Select General Controller settings and you’ll see the following screen:

Let us know if this helps!

[Edit]
Here we go. If you go into your Device Manager in Windows, you can organize your drivers by container by setting View -> Devices by container.
You’ll then see something like this:

I would suggest trying reinstalling the drivers under Wireless Controller.

#5

Hi, ortizgames. Tried out what you mentioned. Reinstalled the drivers. The steam settings were what I already had. Still, have the same problem. Also, when viewing my characters in the book, I notice it’s not just the left joystick that’s pulling up. When I tap on R1 to switch to the next character, it still jumps back to the first character. Doesn’t remain on the next character.

#6

Hmm. One last thing: can you open up your Game Controller properties within WIndows? Usually pressing the Windows key and typing “Game Controller” will bring up something like “set up game controllers”.

You should be able to see your connected controller like so:
image

If you select Properties, you’ll get a window like this:
image

If your controller is moving up on its own, you should see the Axes indicator off-center. You might be able to go to the Settings tab in this window then, and calibrate it to be centered.
Hopefully this resolves your issue!

#7

Thank you for all the assistance you are providing! Unfortunately this didn’t help as well. The controller is correctly calibrated.

#8

Hmmm. Okay, last test: Do you have any other input peripherals connected to your computer? Disconnect them and your keyboard, then start the game and try playing with the controller.

#9

Will get it done when I’m back home later.
Thank you.

#10

Ok managed to try what you suggested. Unplugged my keyboard and mouse (my only 2 input peripherals). PS4 controller left joystick still not working as intended in the game. It works correctly in the steam menu in big picture mode. In any menu screen in battle chasers (options menu, book), when I push the left joystick down, it selects the items below. But the minute I release it, it starts moving towards the top till the topmost item is selected. So still pulling up.

#11

This is exceedingly strange.
I can’t make any promises, but I will look into it.
If you could post your system specs from the Steam > Help > System Information window, that might help.

Thanks, dioprem.

Ok here is something interesting. I’ve plugged in my PS4 controller to a different USB port, one behind the case. Previously I plugged it into the port at the top of my case. This causes my controller to be detected as a “generic XInput controller” by steam instead of the PS4 one. However, the joystick problem is no longer present. Only thing is now all the buttons displayed by the game are A,B,X,Y and so on instead of showing the usual circle, square, triangle etc. buttons of my PS4 controller. Posting the system specs again. The main difference is the the “game controller” option is different.

Was there any progress on this issue? I’m having the same problem. My Ps4 controller works fine for other games, but not for this one. And when I plug in a 360 controller it works as intended.

#16

We’re still looking into it, Cid! Thank you for all your patience.

#17

Tried out the full release today. Unfortunately, the issue is still persisting. Any news on when this might be fixed? Thank you.

Edit: Edited the post title for clarity that the issue occurs when using the PS4 controller and playing the game on steam.

#18

I have the same problem as well! :frowning:

#19

wampatan, have you already tried the steps that Andres posted earlier in the thread?

Also, when your controller is plugged in, what icons are you seeing? Can you post a screenshot of what your book menu looks like?

#20

Hi,
Thanks for responding.

I can confirm that my Steam controller configuration is as instructed in the earlier post. I had no other peripherals added except for my keyboard and mouse. Also my video drivers are up to date as is my DirectX.

In the controller properties of Windows (Test tab under Advanced), when I move the LEFT analog stick around, it registers on the test window. Although moving left makes the window move to the previous tab (Settings). Moving the RIGHT analog stick moves the mouse cursor around and moving the D-PAD shows moves the POV hat in the test window.

Honestly speaking, I doubt this is the controller’s fault - it works fine with my other Steam game (Dragon’s Dogma) as well as my PS4 Remote Play. The controller also works perfectly in Steam’s Big Picture Mode.

With my controller plugged in, the game displays Playstation controller button icons (X, O, etc). On the main menu, the D-pad does nothing but pushing down on the LEFT analog stick does move the menu cursor down but when released, the cursor goes back to the top as if the up button was being held down. This happens in-game with the book menu as well. However the shoulder, face and option buttons all work without issue.
